ISBE is the organisation for concerned professionals and environmentally aware corporations. It is a multi-disciplinary learned society founded in 1989 by a group of medical scientists, hygienists, chemists, architects, engineers and others, who saw the need for amalgamating their diverse skills and knowledge.

ISBE aims to foster international collaboration and to promote the importance of good indoor air quality and the indoor and built environment.

ISBE has shown itself to be unrivalled as a forum for the dissemination and discussion of new ideas and developments in the fast changing field of indoor air quality and the indoor and built environment.

ISBE works to:
  • Improve international and interdisciplinary communication on matters of indoor air quality and the indoor and built environment.
  • Advance the science and technology of environmental control and encourage their adoption into practice.
  • Educate and inform professionals of all relevant disciplines, politicians, legislators, and the public through its publications and conferences.
  • Establish national and regional sections worldwide. Individual members include academics, government employees and private consultants.

    Membership

ISBE membership includes reduced subscription to the journal Indoor and Built Environment (ISSN 1420-326X).

One of ISBE's major activities is organising and running conferences. International conferences are held each year at venues planned to serve its world membership. In addition to these conferences ISBE joins with other associations either to hold joint conferences or as a sponsor.

    History of ISBE

The International Society of the Built Environment was founded by a group of scientists from around the world at a meeting in Europe in 1989. They came from a variety of disciplines and had interests ranging over a variety of aspects of indoor air quality. Their consensus was that there was no association which was truly international or really multidisciplinary concerning indoor air quality. Furthermore there was no journal covering this subject.

Discussions were held at which it was proposed to form an international association called "Indoor Air International". The explicit intention of the founding members was that IAI's constitution should be open and democratic and that anyone should be able to join.

In 1995 IAI changed its name to "The International Society of the Built Environment" and the title of the journal was changed to "Indoor and Built Environment". In 2003 publication of the journal was taken over by SAGE Publications, London, UK, to whom ownership was given in 2006.

Indoor and Built Environment is one of the peer-reviewed journals produced by SAGE Publications, London, UK. It is a high quality publication published six times a year under the editorship of Dr J A Hoskins and attracts papers from all over the world. The international editorial board is comprised of distinguished experts with expertise in a wide variety of subjects associated with the indoor and built environment.
